The Differences and Similarities of the First Trump-Harris Presidential Debate
The long awaited first Presidential Debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris has come and gone. The event highlighted some stark contrasts and similarities between the two candidates. It’s clear that Kamala Harris is not a female version of Mr. Trump’s previous competitor, President Joe Biden. It is also clear that Mr. Trump was mellow and a bit off his game. Both candidates left something to be desired about the specifics of their policy plans.
Civility
From the start, Kamala Harris set the tone of the debate by demonstrating leadership and respect, including walking across the stage to pursue a handshake with Mr. Trump. Former President Trump left the debate stage without shaking the hand of Vice President Harris. The contrast in approaches gave the impression that the usually commanding Donald J. Trump was reticent and/or dismissive. Given the preoccupation with differences in size of the two opponents, it seems Mr. Trump’s advisers tried to avoid accusations about physical dominance on his part.
